Hockey Australia is saddened to learn of the passing of one of Australian hockey’s finest umpires, Gordon Getley.
Gordon’s commitment to hockey was unprecedented and his 40-year commitment to umpiring the game saw him awarded his Australian umpiring badge in 1969 and an international grade 1 badge in 1979.Â
At an international level, Gordon’s international appointments included a New Zealand international tour, a pre-Olympic tournament and the Manning Cup Series while at a national level, Gordon adjudicated National Championships from 1971-1982, including six finals appearances, as he accumulated close to 300 State League umpiring appearances and 13 finals appearances.
Gordon was a stalwart in the game and his dedication to hockey continued after his on-field career as he took on roles as President of Hockey WA and Chairman of the Women’s World Cup organizing committee in Perth in 2002.
Gordon is a Life Member of Hockey WA and received his Hockey Australia Award of Merit for his service to hockey in 1985.
Hockey Australia extends its deepest condolences to the Getley family, Gordon’s friends, and the Hockey WA Community.
