Greetings and salutations, and welcome to Statwatch, our weekly look at the world of scholastic field hockey through its numbers and how they compare over the years. This is especially useful this time of year as just about every team out there is playing a game which could end their season; only a handful of league fixtures remain on the docket.
The statistical occurrence of this past week has to have been the 17 goals that Philadelphia Catholic League champion Radnor Archbishop Carroll (Pa.) scored in the PIAA District 12 Class AA title match against Philadelphia Academy of the Arts (Pa.). As far as we can tell, it’s the most goals one team has scored in a game this year, but we are noticing that there are a lot fewer of these type of runaway games than there were in the Score-O Decade of the 2010s.
Below is our week’s sample of stats, gathered by fine sources such as Lancaster Online, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, New Jersey Advance Media, the governing bodies of Kentucky and Michigan, and, of course, the easy-to-use MaxPreps.com platform. I encourage you to get your fellow teams to enter their information there as well as whichever is your local news site, so that we can aim for as complete a statistical picture of the country as possible.
