Marcus Rashford’s most prolific season at club level coincided with Erik ten Hag’s arrival as Manchester United manager with the Mancunian plundering 30 goals in all competitions, emerging as the club’s top scorer as the Red Devils clinched the Carabao Cup while also qualifying for the Champions League.
His performances meant the Dutchman greenlit a brand-new five-year deal for the Englishman and it was hoped that the 26-year-old would go on to do even greater things in Ten Hag’s second season as manager. That could not be further from the truth.
The England international struggled in front of goal, netting only eight times in all competitions. Being goal-shy is one thing but Rashford’s attitude while on the pitch did not please fans as he tended to give up when things got difficult and regressed to the same level he showed under former interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
Not only on the pitch, the academy graduate was involved in numerous off-field controversies including getting caught partying after a Manchester derby thrashing while he also called in sick before an FA Cup tie after he was spotted taking part in a 12-hour tequila bender in Belfast.
Rashford-EtH tiff
Ten Hag’s trust in the versatile forward faltered and the pair’s relationship got strained as the season went on. With the 20-time English league champions grappling with PSR concerns, new co-owners INEOS are reportedly planning a summer clearout to raise funds in order to reinvest into the first-team squad.
Multiple high-profile names are in danger of getting axed with Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial having already left the club while Casemiro, Harry Maguire and more could all follow suit. Surprisingly, Rashford could also be moved on should a decent offer come United’s way.
He would prefer to stay at his boyhood club and even met the new co-owners in order to save his club future. No decision was taken as the club was focused on the end-of-season review and the manager’s future.
Ten Hag has been confirmed to be staying and has even signed a new long-term deal. Now, The Sun have claimed that Ten Hag, who is barely on speaking terms with the forward, is open to moving on the Manchester-born star with the Red Devils hoping to raise as much as £80 million for their No 10.
EtH open to Rashford sale
However, following the drastic drop-off in form and his national team snub, realistically, United remain open to a sale should they receive a bid of around £60 million.
“Manchester United will listen to offers for Marcus Rashford after the breakdown of his relationship with Erik ten Hag.
“The future of the manager was tied in with the Red Devils forward, 26. Now Ten Hag is staying, the club will look to cash in on the academy graduate who became one of United’s brightest stars.
“They will want £80 million for their No10 but may have to accept nearer £60m following his drop in form last season.”
Paris Saint-Germain were rumoured to be ready to reignite their interest in Rashford, who has remained a long-term target. But whether they actually place a bid remains to be seen. Rashford is expected to rejoin training on July 8. A clearer picture is expected to emerge soon.
