Man United are now sweating on the fitness of winger Antony, who suffered a serious looking injury in the game against Fenerbahce.
Manchester United Football Club picked up a hard-fought draw away at Fenerbahce on Thursday night. As a standalone result, it was decent, though in terms of the Europa League, the Red Devils are yet to win having picked up three points from three games.
Erik ten Hag will be feeling the pressure this morning as at times, the performance left plenty to be desired. The Old Trafford club continue to offer up a real mixed bag under the Dutchman and it’s hard to gauge whether the side are making improvements or not…
The situation was worsened by yet another injury blow, with the club now sweating on the fitness of attacker Antony. The Brazilian came on in the second half, though had to be subbed off after an innocuous looking injury took place.
The former Ajax man needed the help of a stretcher, while after the game, the club confirmed that Antony left the stadium in a protective boot. After the game, Ten Hag offered an immediate update on the winger.
Here’s what the gaffer had to say in full here on the injury to Antony:
“It’s really unlucky for him. I feel real compassion for him, when he worked so hard in training.” Ten Hag told media, including ManUtd.com.
“His training performances are that good that he deserved to come on. When you have to come off so quickly, that is really sad to see. Hopefully, it’s not too bad, we have to wait 24 hours for what the assessment is.”
I know Antony hasn’t really set the world alight on the field, but to lose him as an option is another blow for the gaffer. It leaves United with just three fit wingers and if this is a long-term injury, it adds an extra stress on strain on Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad.
It does feel like Antony could be missing for a fair while here. You can always get a good indication on severity when you watch the player and the winger looked absolutely distraught. No doubt we’ll hear more official communication on the situation next week and until then, we’ll just have to wait patiently.
Due to the quick turnaround in between games, there’s absolutely no chance we see Antony involved against West Ham on Sunday.
