Fans are excited about the possibility of a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Julio Cesar Chavez. The former three-division world champion Chavez uploaded a mock poster showing him and Mayweather Jr., with the inscription ‘September 16th in Las Vegas.’
Fans wanted to see a fight between these two boxing greats years ago but never got the opportunity. Fans have speculated who would have won if Chavez and Mayweather had fought.
The question is, would fans be interested in paying to see Mayweather vs. Chavez now? Chavez retired 19 years ago in 2005, and he was well past his prime then. Unlike Mike Tyson, Chavez looks his age and then some, and he might be overmatched against Mayweather.
A Possible Exhibition in the Works?
The exhibition fight between the two former champions hasn’t been made official, and it’s unclear if this was just a gag on the 62-year-old Chavez’s part to get some publicity. Mayweather’s love of money makes an exhibition match a possibility. However, due to his age, it would be a risky fight for Chavez.
He’s 15 years older than Mayweather, and he hasn’t been competing in exhibition matches to stay active the way he has. The Mexican star would need to pass physicals, and they would need to find a state that would sanction the match.
Chavez and Mayweather should have fought back in the mid-1990s when Julio was still fighting. However, back then, Mayweather wasn’t a star and the fight wouldn’t have sold well. The huge PPV star back then was Oscar De La Hoya, and he fought Chavez twice.
Floyd is fighting an exhibition this Saturday, August 24th, against John Gotti III, live on DAZN. Whether Mayweather intends to fight Chavez on September 16th is unknown. That would be a quick turnaround for the 47 Mayweather, but he’d probably do it if the money is right.
Mayweather has kept his name in the spotlight doing exhibitions since he retired after his fight against former UFC champion Conor McGregor in 2017. Many fans felt the fight should have been ruled an exhibition match, too, given that McGregor was making his pro debut in boxing.
