The Golden State Warriors and Chris Paul have discussed extending his guarantee date back from its current date of June 28th into July, sources tell Anthony Slater of The Athletic. For the Warriors, they could continue to keep their trade options available to them as offseason business plays out. If Paul becomes a free agent, he will surely sign for a number far less than $30 million and this increases the possibility of that contract becoming guaranteed. Paul could be incentivized by the Warriors if they make part of that contract guaranteed and later eventually waive him.
Paul has maintained his Bird rights throughout his career, opting into his contract in 2017 to orchestrate a trade from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Houston Rockets. While on his next contract with the Rockets, he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder and then again to the Phoenix Suns.
Golden State is believed to have serious enough interest in exploring the trade market where they are also choosing to wait to engage Klay Thompson on contract talks.Â
In 58 games last season, Paul averaged 9.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 6.8 assists in 26.4 minutes.Â
