During an interview today, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’s assistant coach, Kenny Ellis, got Keyshawn Davis furious when he said he thinks Abdullah Mason is the best lightweight in the division outside of Tank.
The 25-year-old Keyshawn (11-0, 7 KOs), who started his pro career with a lot of hype behind him due to his 2020 Olympic silver medal, feels he’s the guy right below Tank Davis.
The problem is, Keyshawn is failing to progress, and isn’t performing anywhere near the level of the 21-year-old Abdullah Mason. When they performed on Shakur Stevenson’s card on July 6th at the Prudential Center in Newark, Keyshawn was badly upstaged by Mason.
While Mason stole the show with the performance of the night with his third-round knockout of Luis Lebron, Keyshawn struggled badly in a fight against Miguel Madueno.
“I think the hottest lightweight right now is Abdullah Mason,” said Kenny Ellis to MillCity Boxing, making it clear that he views the 21-year-old Abdullah Mason as the best lightweight.
Keyshawn Davis: “Bro [Abdullah Mason] is fighting 126-pounders, and y’all praising him. That’s a step up. He’s fighting 126-pounders, bro? The guy came from 126 to fight Abdullah. Do your research.”
“The Best At The 135 Division.⭐️ #nodebates,” said Keyshawn on Instagram, posing in an old photo of him, Shakur Stevenson, and Gervonta Davis, including himself among those two and labeling it as “the best.”

Keyshawn looked like he panicked from the pressure that Madueno put on him and resorted to WWE wrestling moves, lifting him off the floor, cuffing, straight arming, and holding all night. It was a miracle that Keyshawn wasn’t disqualified for all the wrestling moves because I lost track of the rule-bending in that fight, and it was an awful performance. The top brass at Top Rank had to have been troubled at what they witnessed from Keyshawn.
Many boxing fans feel that Keyshawn will be little more than a career gatekeeper who talks good game outside of the ring but can’t cut it against the top-level opposition.
If this view is true, Top Rank made a mistake by signing Keyshawn, and they need to figure out what they want to do with him. Keep him around as an outside-of-the-ring entertainer or talker type, or give up and view him as a lost cause.
