Erik Spoelstra is the leading candidate to replace Steve Kerr as Team USA head coach, following Kerr’s stint.

Kerr is anticipated to step down after his tenure, making way for a new leader ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Evan Sidery tweeted that Spoelstra, who was Kerr’s assistant on the national team, is seen as the strong internal favorite to take over.

Kerr, who led Team USA to a fifth consecutive gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, previously served as an assistant coach in 2020 and head coach starting in December 2021.

Despite a fourth-place finish at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, Kerr’s leadership in Paris solidified his legacy with the national team.

Spoelstra’s credentials include a successful tenure as head coach of the Miami Heat, where he won two NBA championships and made six Eastern Conference Finals appearances.

He joined Team USA as an assistant coach for the 2023 FIBA World Cup and was part of the coaching staff for the 2016 Olympic team.
