Errol Spence will fight WBC/WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora in late January at Cowboy Stadium or the training facility in Arlington, Texas.
There’s no mention of whether this will be on PPV, but that’s likely how it will be broadcast. Despite his inactivity and recent defeat, Spence remains a PPV attraction. Fundora is well known to hardcore boxing fans, and that should be enough for this match to bring in good numbers on PPV.
Barboza Box reports the Spence vs. Fundora will happen at the end of January. The former unified welterweight champion Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) will be coming off an 18-month layoff and a knockout loss to Terence Crawford when he makes his debut at 154 against Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs)
The fight is a do-or-die type of matchup for the 34-year-old Spence because he’s had long spells of inactivity due to injuries and soft living during the last four years. This is a fight being given to Spence due to his popularity.
It’s also a fight that gives Fundora a good chance of holding onto his two belts because if he were to fight WBC interim champion Vergil Ortiz Jr, the chances are high that he’d lose to him. Ortiz Jr. isn’t as popular as Spence. So, it’s not a marketability fight for Fundora.
Spence’s defeat against Crawford was brutal, and he took terrible punishment, but his fight against Yordenis Ugas was also hard. Errol has fought only three times since 2020 because he can’t stay healthy.
The 26-year-old Fundora, 6’6″, will have a big size and youth advantage over Spence, and it will be interesting if Errol has enough left to win.
If Spence is victorious, that could open the door for a rematch with Crawford if the Nebraska native doesn’t retire. There are a lot of other excellent fights at 154 for Spence if he captures the WBC and WBO belts from Fundora.
