The New York Giants continued their downward spiral on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in a 14-11 loss to the lowly New Orleans Saints.
The Giants had an opportunity to send the game into overtime, but Graham Gano’s game-tying field goal attempt was blocked with just seconds remaining. It was a fitting end to an ugly game and a reminder that Brian Daboll’s group finds new, interesting, and embarrassing ways to lose on a weekly basis.
Now the Giants head into a Sunday game against the Baltimore Ravens in which they opened as 14.5-point home underdogs. Yeesh.
As we enter Week 15, here’s a look at where the Giants place in a multitude of power rankings.
Nate Davis, USA TODAY:
ICYMI, they’ve been in existence for exactly 100 seasons. They are also two losses from the first 10-game skid in franchise history.
Barry Werner, List Wire:
The Giants found another way to lose this year as a Saints lineman leapfrogged the line and blocked a field-goal attempt that would have tied the game. Team is awful.
NFL Nation, ESPN:
There’s no reason to get too fancy. Sure, the Giants are averaging an embarrassing 5.2 yards per pass play and rank dead last with eight touchdown passes in 13 games, but it all ties into their inability to score points. The Giants are averaging 14.9 points per game, which is more than two full points worse than any other team. When asked Sunday why their passing game struggled so badly against the Saints, coach Brian Daboll said, “It’s a collective thing, put it on me.” Fair enough, because he took over playcalling this season.
Vinnie Iyer, The Sporting News:
The Giants showed some resilience with their defense but ran out of what they needed from their offense and special teams. The fate of Brian Daboll is still not looking good.
Frank Schwab, Yahoo! Sports:
The Giants played terribly but still had a 35-yard FG attempt to send the game to overtime. And it got blocked. This season can’t end soon enough for them.
Eric Edholm, NFL.com:
Sunday started with a plane flying over MetLife Stadium, bearing a message begging John Mara to fix the team. It ended with Graham Gano’s 35-yard game-tying field-goal attempt being blocked in the final seconds against the Saints. The Giants’ defense played gamely while battling injuries, and Drew Lock overcame a brutal first half to give New York a chance late. Still, there was nothing pretty about this one, which dropped the Giants to 0-7 at MetLife this season, with two playoff-relevant teams (Baltimore, Indianapolis) left on the home schedule. In fact, all four remaining games (including road matchups against Atlanta and Philadelphia) are against postseason-hungry opponents. Brian Daboll has a month left to salvage something from this lost season, but the vibes seem to be pretty dismal right now.
Alex Kennedy, Pro Football Network:
This has been a season to forget for New York. The Giants lost their eighth consecutive game on Sunday, dropping their Week 14 contest against the Saints 14-11.
Daniel Jones was benched and subsequently released after 10 games, and the team has been playing Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito since. Regardless of who’s under center, this offense has struggled mightily.
It will be interesting to see if the Giants part ways with head coach Brian Daboll. While he’s had some tough outings, plenty of franchises would love to hire him if New York fires him.
