Man United could still make a move for another attacker, with Ivan Toney under consideration.
Manchester United have made a couple of signings this summer. One of those, Joshua Zirkzee, who has been acquired to help ease the goalscoring burden on Rasmus Hojlund’s shoulders.
Sadly, the Dane has now been ruled out for six weeks. That leaves United’s striking options down to just Zirkzee, who is unproven.
As a result, The Telegraph believe Erik ten Hag would like another attacker signing before the end of the current summer transfer window.
It’s stated that United are still considering a move to sign 28-year-old Brentford striker, Ivan Toney.
Toney had been a consistent scorer in the Premier League, until a suspension for gambling. It feels like he has been angling for a move away from Brentford all summer long, though that is yet to happen.
Now, with Hojlund now injured, United could accelerate a move to bring in another forward.
Toney would add quality and experience to the Reds’ attack, though I do wonder whether having three strikers, in a one-striker system, makes sense. With money tight, I’m just not sure it’s the wisest way to spend the budget.
I know Marcus Rashford doesn’t like playing there, but he’s a decent option. We also have Chido Obi-Martin coming through the entrance door soon, while Ethan Wheatley is another top talent.
The depth is already there for United. signing Toney could lead to more unhappiness as Zirkzee, Hojlund and the Englishman all fight for one starting berth. He’s also a big personality and sometimes fiery character. I’m not sure he’d work well within the current Reds dressing room.
