Former NBA champion John Salley has a strong message for those criticizing Bronny James after he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Salley believes that detractors of the young player are simply envious that they didn’t come up with the idea themselves.

In June 2024, the Lakers made history by selecting Bronny James with the 55th overall pick in the NBA Draft, pairing him with his father, LeBron James, on the same team.

This father-son duo marks a unique moment in NBA history, sparking both excitement and criticism.

Salley, who won four NBA championships during his career, spoke out in defense of Bronny, emphasizing the significance of the Lakers’ decision.

“I love that Bronny got drafted to the Lakers,” Salley told TMZ Sports, expressing his approval of the move.

He pointed out that many of Bronny’s critics are likely “mad they didn’t think of it or do it” themselves, underscoring the rarity and value of the opportunity.

Salley highlighted the advantages Bronny has, not only being the son of an NBA legend but also having the chance to create his own legacy in the league.

“Everybody talking all that smack, listen,” Salley continued, addressing those who have questioned Bronny’s qualifications or the Lakers’ choice.

He argued that if anyone had the same opportunity, they would have made the same decision, considering the unique circumstances.

Salley emphasized that LeBron James has positioned his son for success, not just financially, but by giving him the chance to play alongside him.

“Even if he doesn’t pan out, he would have the experience of playing with his dad,” Salley added, noting that the experience alone is invaluable.

The former Lakers center also dismissed concerns about whether Bronny will get significant playing time during his rookie year.

“We don’t know. It don’t make a difference if he plays. He’s on the team. He’s one of the 12,” Salley stated.

Bronny’s signing with the Lakers was a four-year, $7.9 million contract, ensuring that he will have time to develop and prove himself in the NBA.

As the season approaches, all eyes will be on Bronny to see how he handles the expectations and pressure that come with his unique position.
