Canelo Alvarez defends his three super middleweight titles tonight against WBA mandatory Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas. The fight is billed as Mexico vs. Puerto, and Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) hopes it will live up to some of the great matches of the past.

Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) is a big underdog, but he’s the size to potentially pull off an upset if he doesn’t get caught. At yesterday’s weigh-in, Berlanga looked painfully thin.
Boxing News 24 will give live updates and results, as shown below.
Tonight, the young upstart Berlanga, 27, is expected to be in the upper 180s or low 190s, testing Canelo’s ability to handle a light heavyweight-sized fighter. If Canelo loses, he’ll kick himself for not including a strict 10-lb rehydration clause.
Berlanga is a good warmup if Canelo is serious about moving up to 175 to possibly face light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in a rematch next May. Besides that, tonight’s fight is merely a stay-busy fight for Canelo.

In the chief support fight tonight, WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara defends against Danny Garcia. Some feel the promoters purposefully chose this fight for the co-feature to target older fans who remembered these two aging fighters when they were at the top of their game many years ago. Lara is 41, and Danny is 36.
