Brit boxer April Hunter will face Canadian Mary Spencer in Montreal
“Make or break” for Mary Spencer, on June 6th, as her journey towards the summit will reach a point of no return in a clash where she will attempt to seize the WBA Gold title of the welterweights against British world contender April Hunter.
This one-time-only fight, scheduled for 10 rounds at the Cabaret du Casino de Montreal, will be presented on the undercard to Butler vs. Volny, all broadcasted on Punching Grace and ESPN+ starting at 7pm.
“It’s make or break! Hunter is an agile boxer with good movements and heavy hands. Her unorthodox style makes her a challenging opponent, and we know she’ll arrive here extremely prepared, with a very professional team led by Peter Fury who has proven himself in the past,” explained Mary Spencer’s coach, Samuel Décarie-Drolet.
Trained by Peter Fury, April Hunter (7-1), a 29-year-old athlete from Liverpool, is an almost undefeated athlete. The only blemish on her record, a loss by decision against her compatriot Kirstie Bavington, was actually avenged in her last fight last July, where she even knocked Bavington down.
Hunter fought and won on the undercard of her teammate Savannah Marshall when she clashed with Claressa Shields on the historic all-female event in October 2022.
By capturing the WBA Gold belt, a key to the top of the rankings, Hunter hopes to finally get her first chance at a world championship fight.
“Being in the top 10 for years, I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for a very long time. I can’t wait for it, but most importantly, I can’t wait to do the job, because I won’t miss my chance on June 6th,” affirmed the British athlete ranked number 1 at 154 lbs on BoxRec, April Hunter.
The reality is quite different on the side of Mary Spencer (8-2, 6 KOs). The powerful Canadian aims for a second consecutive victory since her two consecutive losses in world championship fights. Aware that a third opportunity could be her last, she is more confident than ever, considering herself in the best shape of her life.
“I’m always grateful for the opportunity to step into the ring, but this particular fight excites me for several reasons; I had an incredible training camp, I can’t wait to show the results to everyone, and really, I’ve wanted to face April Hunter for a long time. So with small gloves and in a small ring, on June 6th, she will become my prey,” emphasized Mary Spencer.
As Spencer’s speech suggests, there will be no room for half-measures in the Montreal camp.
“We want a title, and Hunter is the type of opponent we must defeat to show that Mary not only belongs to the elite, but that she is at the top of her division,” added Samuel Décarie-Drolet.
The Spencer vs. Hunter fight is thus added to an action-packed card including the highly anticipated local fight between Steven ‘Bang Bang’ Butler (34-4-1, 28 KOs) and Patrice ‘Vicious’ Volny (18-1, 12 KOs).
A world IBO super-middleweight championship fight is also scheduled between the current champion, Osleys ‘El Tornado’ Iglesias (10-0, 9 KOs), and Evgeny Shvedenko (16-1-1, 7 KOs). Finally, Arthur Biyarslanov (14-0, 12 KOs), Shamil Khataev (12-0, 3 KOs), Leïla Beaudoin (11-1, 1 KO), Luis Santana (11-0, 5 KOs), and Jhon ‘El Tigre’ Orobio (8-0, 8 KOs) will also be in action.
