Man United are weighing up a move to sign Ben Chilwell from Chelsea.

Manchester United had no consistency in the left-back position last season. Tyrell Malacia didn’t play once due to injury. Who knows where the Dutchman is currently in terms of his recovery? Luke Shaw was often injured, too.

Erik ten Hag needs to find someone who can come in and do a job as and when required. It’s why recent rumours about Sergio Reguilon made sense after the Spaniard’s decent loan spell at Old Trafford during the first half of last season.

Today, the Daily Mail have thrown another Premier League left-back into the mix; Ben Chilwell.

According to their information, United view the 27-year-old left-back as a player who is ‘among the options’ for the Reds, as they look to find competition for Shaw.

The first thing this tells us is that United still have no confidence in Malacia. He has been out for well over a year now and the Dutchman will need time to rediscover his fitness and form.

Secondly, it makes us realise that Shaw is not reliable. After suffering that horrific injury against PSV all those years ago, the ex-Southampton man has never been the same player and he will always pick up problems. For all his talent, we cannot rely upon him to play week-in-week-out.

Is Chilwell the man to replace Shaw? I’m a massive fan of the Englishman’s. He contributes on both sides of the ball and he’s always going to make an impact.

The problem? He’s another one who has treatment table issues. I’m not sure that it’s the wisest idea to bring in another player like that at this current juncture. He’d also cost a pretty penny in terms of both weekly wage and transfer fee.
