Man United could make their move to sign Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea this summer.
Manchester United’s defensive options could look rather different going into the new campaign. The Old Trafford club have allowed Raphael Varane to walk away. Jonny Evans will probably follow suit. Who knows what’s going on with Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire? Though the latter does want to stay.
At least one new centre-back will be brought in over the summer. Several names have been linked with filling the void. Most of them expensive options. With money thought to be tight for the Red Devils, it could make sense to go for that B-tier signing, who’d save the club financially.
Today’s rumour from The Independent suggests the Old Trafford club could be taking that approach. They believe Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah is a genuine target.
According to the claim, United are ‘considering’ a move to sign the 24-year-old centre-back this summer, as they continue to assess their options.
What’s interesting is that Chelsea would be willing to do business and sell either Chalobah or Conor Gallagher, in order to meet profit and sustainability rules. The English centre-back would be available for around £25m.
United are said to be ‘weighing up’ a bid to sign Chalobah, as INEOS believe player trading is one area where the club must ‘drastically improve’ under their regime.
Chalobah is under the age of 25, while United view him as a modern-day player who could fit into the ‘pressing demands’ that are placed on players in this day and age.
The defender has dipped in and out of the Chelsea side over the last year or so, while I wouldn’t expect Chalobah to be someone who starts every week at United. Rather, he’s more likely to fill that Lindelof role, who comes in and out of the side when needed. Whether or not the player would be happy with that job remains to be seen…
