Man United could have Mason Mount back and available for selection this weekend against Burnley.

Manchester United managed to overcome a resilient Sheffield Wednesday side fighting for their lives this midweek, with Erik ten Hag using a real make-shift squad due to injuries decimating the dressing room.

The game itself was another exciting watch containing a really inconsistent Red Devils side, though the 4-2 victory was probably a fair reflection of the game.

Matches are now coming thick and fast at the business end of the campaign, with the next game taking place this coming Saturday against Burnley, who are also fighting for their lives.

Ahead of that game, the gaffer gave us an early indication in regard to team news. Sadly, it looks as though Casemiro will have to continue at centre-back. However, there was a positive injury update, with one player who ‘will return’ to the squad; Mason Mount.

When asked about whether a centre-back could return this weekend, Ten Hag said:

“No, not yet. We have to be patient for it,” the Dutchman replied to BBC’s Match of the Day, per ManUtd.com. “For coming back for the game against Burnley, I don’t expect [them]. Mason Mount, he will return, I think.”

The Englishman has had a brutal first season at Old Trafford. Injuries have limited Mount’s appearances, meaning the ex-Chelsea man has struggled for any sort of consistency whatsoever. It has been a tough scenario and in reality, we’re not going to see the best from him until next season at this point.

I’d like to think that Mount will finish the season strongly, particularly with a handful of games left to go, which will give him that positive mental attitude heading into a massive pre-season for the midfielder.

I still genuinely believe he’s a guaranteed starter for this side when up to 100% fitness. It’s now up to Mount to prove that to us all in the 2024/25 campaign.
