Man United are said to have made an offer to sign Sander Berge from Burnley.

Manchester United are now looking to strengthen their midfield before the close of the transfer window in around a fortnight. The Old Trafford club have backed Erik ten Hag heavily this summer, providing the Dutchman with players of genuine quality in positions of need.

The icing on the cake would be the acquisition of a mobile defensive midfielder. Recently, Sander Berge has been linked with filling that void.

Over the last 24 hours, the Daily Mail have provided an update on that front, claiming that United have actually ‘made an offer’ to sign the 26-year-old.

Berge has not been involved in Burnley’s two opening games of the season amid interest in the player, though the Lancashire club are saying he has a ‘small knock’.

It’s thought the bid made by United was short of Burnley’s £30m asking price, but it does signal United’s intent to bring in a new midfielder this summer.

To us here at Old Trafford Faithful, it feels like United are in a situation where they have to sell before they can buy. Perhaps letting Scott McTominay go, amid Fulham interest, could be the key to bringing Berge in.

Ten Hag is looking to build a balanced squad, with United struggling for numbers in that defensive midfield position. The Dutchman needs an alternative to Casemiro and there can be no doubt that the Norwegian Berge would represent a player of genuine quality in that position.

I expect that this is a transfer rumour that will continue right up until the transfer deadline, as both clubs look to find some middle ground on the transfer fee.
