United had pinpointed the 21-year-old English international as their top defensive target for the upcoming summer transfer window. However, according to talkSPORT, the club is considering withdrawing from the deal due to Everton’s steep asking price, reported to be around £70m (€83m/$89m).
The new co-owners, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS group, are hesitant to meet this valuation, preferring not to continue the club’s tradition of overspending in the transfer market. Alongside Branthwaite, United have also expressed interest in Nice and France defender Jean-Clair Todibo. Talks were reportedly held with Tosin Adarabioyo’s representatives before his free transfer to Chelsea.
Erik ten Hag’s team is scheduled to return to action towards the end of July, heading to the US for pre-season matches against teams such as Arsenal, Liverpool, and Real Betis.
