According to Spanish reports, Man United are closing in on the signature of Martin Zubimendi.

Manchester United Football Club have made a couple of key additions this summer, as INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe look to further strengthen the playing squad.

Doing so is not going to be easy with money believed to be tight due to Premier League spending rules. It may be reliant on selling players first.

However, that isn’t stopping the transfer rumours from continuing. The latest story heavily links Martin Zubimendi with an Old Trafford switch.

It’s Todo Fichajes with the information, as they claim the dependable 25-year-old midfielder is just ‘one step away’ from a United transfer this summer.

Zubimendi would cost around £50m due to a release clause in his Real Sociedad contract, with United now said to be in the lead to sign the Spaniard, pushing ahead of Arsenal.

United are said to have told the player that they’re willing to active the release clause, making a five-year contract offer to the man who replaced Rodri at half-time in the European Championship final.

Bringing in a top-class defensive midfielder who can replace Casemiro would be key. It’s arguably the hardest position in world football right now, while our Brazilian looks every bit a 32-year-old at this stage of his career.

Zubimendi would be a stunning replacement, though I still have major doubt that this move will happen this summer, purely due to the shoestring budget Erik ten Hag is working with.

I honestly believe it’s fully dependent on Casemiro departing, as he is a massive earner at United and freeing up that money on the wage bill could give Ten Hag far more wiggle room in the transfer market.

Do you think a Man United move to sign Martin Zubimendi would make sense? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
