Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has warned Mason Mount that he is unlikely to be afforded major minutes by Erik ten Hag in the upcoming season.
Mount has not really got going since he joined United last summer from Premier League rivals Chelsea.
Last term, consistently occurring injuries kept the England international from nailing down a run of games in the side.
Mount made just 14 appearances in the Premier League, scoring just one goal in the process. Across all competitions, he played 20 times.
The 25-year-old was one of United’s standout players during their pre-season clashes, as he produced a number of fine performances that left fans very encouraged heading into the new campaign.
However, according to Scholes, the presence of Bruno Fernandes means that Mount will find it very difficult to be a regular starter.
Scholes said during a fan debate on The Overlap, “The middle of the pitch is an area where it is just f****** empty most of the time.”
‘Team just break through us all day long. You (fan) mention Casemiro’s legs are going a bit… He’s never been that type of player anyway.”
“He was never that quick and he had great players around him. When Mason Mount came into the team… I think Erik ten Hag is a coach who likes to go for it.”
“He had to change because it wasn’t quite working, but he tried to play Casemiro with Mount and Bruno Fernandes. Two No.10s… That quickly changed.”
The United legend added, “Mount got injured. Are we going to see a fit Mount this year? Even if he is fit, he won’t play instead of Bruno.”
“That’s the only position I see him playing.”
United return to action this weekend when they meet Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City for the Community Shield at Wembley.
The Red Devils then kickstart their 2024/25 Premier League season with a home clash vs. Fulham at Old Trafford on Friday, July 16.
