Manchester United are on the verge of beating Real Madrid in the race to sign Lille defender Leny Yoro.

The 18-year-old is undergoing a medical Wednesday before signing off on a contract with the Premier League club, reports David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Manchester United reached an agreement with Lille last week on a fee believed to be worth €62 million (£52 million).

Despite the progress, Ornstein reports that there is still work to be done in order to get the deal over the line.

Yoro initially had his heart set on a move to Real Madrid, but the reigning Champions League winners haven’t shown any interest in matching United’s price, according to Ornstein.

Real Madrid reportedly didn’t want to enter into a bidding war or match United’s offer for a player who could be signed for free in 2025 after his contract expires.

Real Madrid’s inaction led Lille to accept United’s proposal rather than risk losing Yoro for nothing.

Despite his preference to move to Madrid, Yoro, regarded as one of the best young defenders in Europe, reportedly warmed up to the idea of playing at Old Trafford.

Sealing a deal for Yoro would be a big coup for a Manchester United side that recently bolstered coach Erik ten Hag’s attack. Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee joined from Bologna in a deal reportedly worth over €40 million.
