Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim has joked about a potential transfer to Manchester United after his talks over the Liverpool and West Ham jobs failed to materialise.
Amorim has been mentioned as a coach on INEOS’ wishlist of possible Erik ten Hag replacements.
It’s looking increasingly likely that Ten Hag will be sacked at the end of the season following a very underwhelming and disappointing 2023/24 term at Old Trafford.
A report covered by The Peoples Person late last month relayed that Liverpool and West Ham were also strongly interested in Amorim, with both Jurgen Klopp and David Moyes set to depart their respective clubs at the end of the campaign.
Amorim even travelled to England to hold talks with the Hammers in particular but an agreement couldn’t be struck and he had to go back to Portugal.
Liverpool also moved on from him as they elected to sign Feyenoord’s Arne Slot instead.
Amorim’s decision to make a trip to hold talks with English clubs didn’t go down well with Sporting fans and the 39-year-old even had to issue an apology both to the supporters and his players.
It was recently relayed that despite his act of atonement, an Old Trafford switch for Amorim still shouldn’t be ruled out. He would be keen on taking over from Ten Hag and possibly taking over the reins at one of the world’s biggest and most famous clubs.
Ahead of Sporting’s Primeira Liga clash against Estoril Praia, Amorim was asked about his future and the prospect of him leaving the club for United.
He said, “The same as always. We can’t control what happens in the future, but I’m very focused on Sporting, on the job. The mistakes I’ve made in the past I won’t make in the future.”
“You don’t even know if you’ll continue in your jobs if you might get an offer. My focus is on Sporting and we’re preparing for next season.”
He added, “It’s rumours. The quality of the team and the players also helps. I certainly won’t be catching another plane to England (laughs). I’m Sporting’s coach and I don’t focus on rumours.”
United return to action on Sunday when they face Arsenal at Old Trafford.
