This past week, it was announced that the Delaware state field hockey finals, after many years of being contested at the University of Delaware in Newark, is being moved.

The site will instead be at Delaware State University in Dover. DSU is a historically black land-grant university and is believed to be the first HBCU to be the host of a field hockey state championship in National Federation history.

The DIAA’s press release is silent as to exactly where on the Delaware State University property, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the field hockey was contested on Drass Field, the former home of Wesley College’s sports programs.

We wrote about the merger of Delaware State and Wesley a few years back, and was hopeful that perhaps there would be a movement to bring field hockey to Delaware State University.

Well, at least two field hockey games are going to be held there. I hope that, whoever makes the doubleheader in November, that they will serve as an inspiration to the DSU school commuity and the world beyond in ways that top-down diversity initiatives have failed in the past.
