Hello, everyone, and welcome back to Friday Statwatch, where we make comparisons across eras, celebrate individual and team achievements, and give you all interesting stories behind the numbers.
Today, we’re going to focus a team statistics. Watertown (Mass.), ably coached by the legendary Eileen Donahue, has made itself into one of the finest defensive programs in the history of the sport. The Raiders have two shutout streaks of 30 games or greater, which is absolutely phenomenal.
But even moreso is the fact that the Raiders, currently on an 81-game winning streak heading into last night’s game against Wakefield (Mass.) Memorial, possesses three unbeaten streaks of 77 games or greater. Which makes you wonder: what is Watertown’s record between the start of their 184-game unbeaten streak in 2009 to the the current day? As far as we can figure out, the Raiders have only had four defeats in their last 313 matches dating back to September 2009.
Yep, four. That’s a rate of success which rivals Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) in the heart of their dynastic run from 2000 to 2022, and it is something to be celebrated.
Below is a compilation of available field hockey statistics through last Wednesday from available sources such as Berks Game Day, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, New Jersey Advance Media, the governing bodies of Kentucky and Michigan, and, of course, the easy-to-use MaxPreps.com platform. I encourage you to get your fellow teams to enter their information there as well as whichever is your local news site, so that we can aim for as complete a statistical picture of the country as possible.
