Manchester United took the big call to move on from David de Gea in goal after a few high-profile errors in Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge.
The goalkeeping department was completely overhauled as the Spaniard left after 12 years while academy graduates Dean Henderson, Matej Kovar and Nathan Bishop all departed.
The Dutchman brought in Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir and with Tom Heaton looking to move on to coaching, the club had taken the call to bring in Toby Savin, then representing Accrington Stanley in League Two, as third-choice keeper to complete the training group.
This information comes courtesy The Sun who also claimed that the 23-year-old ended up failing his medical that was conducted back in January.
United were eyeing a goalie
Heaton was at the Euros recently as a training goalkeeper and there are plans to absorb him into the coaching team at the club. And hence, the Red Devils went back in for Savin but he failed his medical again this month.
He had suffered a shoulder injury last season which had restricted him to only nine appearances for the League Two side last season. It did not heal properly and the Englishman lost out on the dream chance to wear the famous red jersey.
“SHREWSBURY keeper Toby Savin missed out on a dream move to Manchester United — because he twice failed a medical at Old Trafford.
“The stopper, 23, was United’s preferred option to be their third choice as veteran Tom Heaton heads for a coaching position and Nathan Bishop moved to Sunderland last year.
“Savin was at League Two Accrington Stanley when he failed his first medical in January, having been watched by scouts from United, Newcastle and Tottenham over the past three seasons.
Two failed medicals
“He left Accrington at the end of the season and would have joined United on a free but he failed a second medical this month.”
The shot-stopper has not stayed a free agent for long though and has sealed a move to Shrewsbury in League One with manager Paul Hurst delighted with the capture.
“Toby attracted interest from clubs higher up the leagues. He is a player with plenty of potential and has all the attributes to be a really good goalkeeper. Our job is to make sure he fulfils that and becomes the best version of himself,” he was quoted as saying.
United might still need backup in goal if Altay Bayindir ends up leaving or if Heaton decides to hang up his gloves. Radek Vitek has shown promise but he might be heading out on loan.
