Five sitting volleyball players have been selected to carry their countries’ flags at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. These athletes will lead their respective delegations during the Opening Ceremony at Place de la Concorde on Wednesday, reflecting the growing recognition of the sport.
Nicky Nieves of the United States has been selected as one of the flagbearers for Team USA, marking her return to the Games after missing Tokyo 2020.
Reflecting on this opportunity, Nieves said, “I’m ready to rock and roll. I’m ready to go.”
She is focused on leading Team USA to its third successive Paralympic gold medal, and her second.
Safet Alibasic will lead the delegation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, looking to build on his bronze medal from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and past gold successes in sitting volleyball. His selection as flagbearer highlights his role as a key figure in his team and his country’s hopes for further success in Paris.
Berik Izmaganbetov will serve as Kazakhstan’s flagbearer, competing for his first Paralympic medal. His role reflects his influence in the growth and popularity of sitting volleyball in Kazakhstan.

Rwanda’s Liliane Mukobwankawe has been chosen to represent her country as a flagbearer, symbolising her determination to achieve Rwanda’s first Paralympic medal. Her selection underscores the progress Rwanda has made in the Paralympic movement. Notably, Liliane was one of the six athletes honoured to carry the Paralympic Games flag at the Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony.
Lena Gabrscek of Slovenia will carry the flag as her team returns to the Paralympic stage after a 12-year absence. Her leadership will be crucial as Slovenia aims to make a strong impact in Paris and pursue their first Paralympic medal in sitting volleyball.
