Throughout the calendar year of 2024, there has been media speculation that Eriksen might seek a move away from the club, but the Dane spoke enthusiastically about continuing his stay following the Barnsley result.

“I feel very good being at United,” he told the press. “There’s one year left [on my contract] so my focus is going to be on this year, going full out, and see what happens afterwards.

“I’m a guy who likes being in a place where my family is settled and at the same time being in a place where I can benefit and play. That’s always going to be my aim.”

Explaining Eriksen’s selection for our 3-0 away win at Southampton in September – Christian’s first competitive start of 2024/25 – Erik ten Hag said: [He played] because he earned it. He has had a very good pre-season and some very good performances in training, so now he has earned a start.”

Earlier in Eriksen’s United career, Ten Hag expanded on the unique qualities that the Dane offers the squad. “Every player has their own characteristics and identity, so another player will always fill it in in a different way,” said Erik. “It’s quite clear that Christian Eriksen, for our squad, brings top quality and he has some specifics that are hard to replace. For instance, his impact in the final third.”

We’re seeing that impact regularly so far this season, in Eriksen’s classically understated way. The goals have brought more attention, but it’s within the subtle nuances of the game – tempo, control, decision-making chief among them – that we really see the best of this humble, elegant midfielder.
