Mateo Kovacic helped Manchester City puncture any new-season optimism at Stamford Bridge by landing the killer blow near the end of Sunday’s 2-0 win over Chelsea.

The reigning Premier League champions led through Erling Haaland’s first-half strike but had to withstand some pressure to maintain their lead. However, with around six minutes of normal time remaining, Kovacic ended his former club’s hopes of getting a result from its season opener with an impressive individual effort.

The Croatian midfielder collected a loose ball after some sloppy passing by the Chelsea backline before rushing toward the edge of the box and scoring with a clever near-post shot.

Kovacic’s goal means City are the first side in Premier League history to win 10 straight games by two or more goals. This win wasn’t as straightforward as some toward the end of their title march last season, though, as the energy and aggression from the likes of Rico Lewis and Kovacic were instrumental in keeping Chelsea at bay.

The hosts had 10 attempts on goal, with the best chance falling to Nicolas Jackson just after an hour. The Senegalese striker twisted to hit a close-range volley straight at Ederson. Jackson also had a goal ruled out for offside near the end of the opening half.

But it was ultimately a deserved victory for Pep Guardiola’s team. City are chasing an unprecedented fifth consecutive top-flight crown.

“This team is so hungry, and it’s a pleasure to be a part of it and win titles,” Kovacic told Sky Sports.
