Man United have an agreement in place with the agents of Antonio Silva. Now, they just need to agree a fee with SL Benfica.

Manchester United will almost certainly sign a defender of some sort this summer. It’s perhaps the area that needs the most attention given the mass problems the Reds have had back there.

Erik ten Hag hasn’t been given any consistency in the position that probably needs it more than any other. Hence, the addition of one reliable centre-half is an absolute must.

Several names have been linked with filling that void. No doubt those stories will continue until at least one defender is brought in. Jarrad Branthwaite seems to be atop the list right now, though do not forget about Antonio Silva.

The man from Portugal was heavily linked with a United move a few months ago, though all went quiet on that front. Now, journalist Darragh Moloney has provided an update on a possible Reds move to sign Silva.

According to his information, United ‘have an agreement’ in place with the agents of the 20-year-old over the signing of the player this summer. Now, it’s down to United to agree a fee with SL Benfica.

That may be easier said than done due to a £85m release clause within Silva’s contract. United ‘hope’ a deal can be struck below that valuation.

Check out Darragh Moloney’s tweet on the news here:

Silva is still so young in footballing terms, though the fact that he could easily give United a decade+ of service is why the fee is so high. The man from Portugal is an insane talent and I don’t doubt he’d walk straight into the team as soon as he arrived at Old Trafford.

I also have no issue with his game translating from Portugal to England. United have typically done well with signings from that league, so why not continue tapping into that market?

Silva has the game that would complement Lisandro Martinez beautifully, assuming the man from Argentina can stay fit after this pretty torrid campaign.
