The amount Ryan Garcia has to pay Devin Haney isn’t the $1.5 million being reported

Yesterday, April 19, all the talk was of Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20KO) and his typical controversial antics, which has become sadly commonplace for the Californian now.

He came in 3.2lbs overweight for his WBC World super-lightweight title fight with nemesis Devin Haney (31-0, 15KO), and appeared to have no regrets or remorse in doing so.

No longer able to win the world title, ‘KingRy’ will now be fined for reneging on his contractual agreement, but it’s not going to be the $1.5 million everyone seems to think it is.

Award winning journalist Dan Rafael reported on what the actual amount owed will be: “Per source, deal Bill Haney cut for with Team Garcia – for Garcia being 3.2 lbs over – was for $600k + 2% of Garcia’s PPV upside (if it reaches the upside threshold). It’s not the $1.5M they keep saying. They’re keeping up that appearance as part of the amended contract. #HaneyGarcia.”

The 25-year-old troubled soul was then seen downing a bottle of beer in front of the packed crowd at the official weigh-in, further trying to antagonise his opponent.

Respected Ring Magazine writer, Lee Groves, added the following tweet on X to certify his disapproval of the challenger’s behaviour, “I’ve avoided Garcia’s pre-fight antics, but as I saw his weigh-in display, one word came to mind: Repulsive. Scaling far over the weight, chugging what appeared to be alcohol on the scale, snarling at Haney and spewing nonsense on the mic, it was a fittingly clownish crescendo.”

Groves, an author of two boxing books, also shared his opinion that young Ryan is “animated by fame and the big stage while Haney is motivated by legacy.”
