Wayne Rooney has stated that Man United should build their team around Bruno Fernandes.

Manchester United fans aren’t feeling very hopeful for the future right about now. It has been a disastrous season for the Old Trafford club, who have struggled all campaign long.

Erik ten Hag isn’t leaving the supporters convinced whatsoever, while injuries haven’t helped his case. An FA Cup final win may well save his job for another year.

Last night’s victory over Newcastle United offers a glimmer of hope. It was a pretty good performance from the Red Devils, who had their captain back available following his absence over the last couple of matches.

Bruno Fernandes makes the world of difference. Although he was deployed in a different role, his impact was there for all to see. He makes this United side tick, due to both his creativity and work rate.

After the game, club legend Wayne Rooney named him as the one United player they have to ‘build the team around’, while the Englishman believes a ‘massive clear out’ is needed, excluding the young players.

Check out what Rooney had to say in full here:

“You have to build the team around Bruno,” the ex-England captain declared on Sky Sports post-match, per The Mirror. “He’s quality and has got fight in him, and then I think all the other players, get rid of them.”

“I think you keep the young players, and you keep Bruno,” Rooney added. “I think it has to be a massive clear out. It has to be. It’s not going to be in one year, but I think it’s going to be in the next couple of years.

Wazza is not wrong. This squad is filled with bang average players on massive wages. Many of them just are not good enough to play at this elite level on a regular basis. Simply put, there are far too many passengers.

This is why Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS wanted to get involved. They know how to run a business and I fully expect the Failsworth-born-businessman to start trimming down this squad and effectively starting again.

Yes, it will take time, probably multiple years, which is probably why Bruno himself is considering his future. He’ll be 30 soon and approaching the point in his career where he probably only has one big contract left in him. Does he commit himself to United during his rebuild? It’s a tough call.

We better hope he stays in Manchester. Without him, this team is nowhere near good enough.
